Namaskara,
My cousin's name is Srinivasa S A, working for Wipro & now in US. Though he doesn't know you, he had referred me two of the Kannada blogs he liked & one was yours. He keeps browsing web for many subjects & sends us the ones he finds interesting. As I am from the same region (ManjuguNi near Sirsi) he referred this to me :)

Thanks

It really hurts me remembering the days when the thick forest between my village & Koorse (place on Sirsi-Kumta main road) got destroyed. Then I was around 6 years & used to watch those big trees getting cut, with my eyes wide open. Then I didn't know the importance forests.

Madhu,
Thanks.
Yes. Minor forests of Manjguni are really degraded and disturbed:(
Forestry economics is a branch of economics or I can say, a part of environmental/ecological economics which deals with the valuation of all ecological services forests provide to human beings. The basic notion is, whenevr we find that a thing doesn't have any value, we try to ignore it or exploit it. But if it shows some value in terms of money, that (might)leads to conservation. That is the very baaaaaaaaaasic idea of forestry economics:) And then, apart from valuation, it involves many other concepts like analysis of ecosystem services provided by forests and many more.

Madhu said...

DhanyavadagaLu,
A very basic question. On a contrary to what you have mentioned about the basic notion, forests are being exploited because they are considered as valuable "ONLY" in terms of money. People are making money illegally. Is it not good to make people aware of intangible benefits we get from Forests? Please correct me if my understanding is wrong. You can email me on madhusudan.paranjape@gmail.com if you feel that this discussion is deviating from the subject of this blog.

Madhu,
Valuing the intangible benefits.... that is what I meant by the term SERVICES in my comment.
There are n number of intangible benefits and are collectively called 'ecosystem services'. That is what is valued in ecological economics. Moreover, economists are trying to educate people on these concepts... participatory forestry (eg JFM- Manjguni also has that) is also one of such programmes. However, such programmes also have pros and cons. But the experiment is going on in that direction. I hope this clears the doubt.
Thanks :)

DhanyavaadagaLu Seema,
What is your observation in Mnajuguni? How was the response? As we say "Hittala Gida Maddalla", people dont realise the value of a real valuable thing when they have it. Though I am from ManjuguNi, I had to spend most of my time outside for various reasons. Whenever I got a chance to go back there, I used to feel like as if I was entering paradise & used to roam inside the forests nearby, because I was missing it. Same way people there should not miss it after everything is gone......

Hi Madhu,
Pranjape....I had talked to a lady with the last name Paranjape whose house is located in the left side lane behind the temple (If remember it correctly).

Minor forest in Manjguni is in vulnerable condition whereas reserve is okay. Per hectare ratio of biomass between RF and MF is 6.25:1. Usually, on an average it will be in the ratio 2.5:1. That means many larger trees are already cut in MF.
Tree density is okay with the ratio 1.5:1…. Disturbance per hectare (cutting, chopping, etc) is also high in MF (33%) as compared to RF (14%)….may due to the proximity of MF to the habitation.
But after the introduction of ASTRA stoves, extraction rate has come down, I feel.

Seema,
Yes, I think you spoke to my Sister-In-Law in Manjuguni. Happy to hear that you visited my house :) Its really a good analysis you have given. Last week when I was speaking to my brother, I came to know about a disturbing news. Earlier greedy people used to cut down Uppangi trees instead of using only the product. Now they have started bringing down Dalchini trees. Sorry, I dont know the biological names for these. Please let me know :) This is just like the story of hen that laid golden eggs. How can we make these people realize that they are destroying some thing invaluable? Please go through following link which I found interesting.

Madhu,
The botonical names are,
Uppage- Garcinia cambogia
Dalchinni- Cinnamomum zeylanicum

People can inform the forest department about such unsustainable harvest. It is very difficultto create awareness among adults who are already greedy and cutting trees for their products. Instead, educate children to prevent future damage. But, I wish there will be forests left to protect until children grow up!

The link was informative. Thanks :)

Namaskara Dr. Eshwara Shaastri Avarige,

Thank you very much for the link. This is different from the normal one which we see before the rainy season. Not only insects, there are many birds, herbs & so many other things which are getting destroyed. How can we stop this? Can we, like minded people, do something to stop this? Your comments please.
